On a fine morning, you open Perfmon from a server, while adding counters, enter a remote server name under ‘Select counters from computer:’ only to receive the error ‘Unable to connect to machine’. The morning is not fine anymore.
Not to worry, here’s a workaround.
- Open REGEDIT and browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Perflib
- Right click on Perflib key and select Permissions.
- Click Add and add ‘Local Service’ with Full Control. (Read access also works).
- Restart the Remote Registry Service if needed.
Go ahead and add as many counters as you need from the remote server. Morning status changed back to ‘fine’.
